VALENTINA GASCA CASTRO

VP Operations and Finance

Hello! My name is Valentina and I am entering my fourth year as a double major in Anthropology and History. As Vice President of Operations and Finance I hope to lay the groundwork for more student engagement and student funding opportunities. I think our departments need to emphasize student participation and input in decision-making. My hope is that, as OpFi, I can increase FASA’s presence in our academic community by supporting student advocacy efforts and funding students that want to make a positive impact on this community. All in all, I am passionate about what FASA can do for the Faculty of Arts and I’m excited to take care of the administrative side of it.
Outside of Uni, I love (love!) to dance, travel, spend time with my family, read, and take part in community organizing. If any of you have any ideas (or criticisms) and need some support please reach out. I meant it when I said I want to hear from you all!

KAYLYN LOCKHART

VP Events

Hi there! My name is Kaylyn, and I am a sixth-year undergraduate student in a combined degree stream for both a BA in English, and a BA in Sociology. I also am serving as your current VP Events for the 2022-2023 academic year! I initially became involved with FASA as the English Department Representative back in 2018, and am excited to see the evolvement of the organisation as a newly appointed executive. I aim to dedicate my time to reconnecting the Faculty of Arts after our long hiatus from one another, and look forward to engaging with my fellow students once again!

SEBASTIAN RODRIGUEZ

VP External

Hi there! My name is Sebastian, and I am currently in my fifth year of a BA in Urban Studies. I ran for the position of VP External with the intent of helping students within the Faculty of Arts advocate for their needs. I believe that students are actively disempowered and made to feel like we don't have a choice but to “suck it up” throughout our degrees, and that is something that is fundamentally wrong. We have agency, and ought to exercise it if we ever want meaningful material changes. My goal is to ensure every opportunity to exercise that agency is presented to students.
My favourite food is pasta and in my spare time, I like to angrily scream at the clouds.

AIMEE MCGRATH

VP Academic

Hey folks! I’m Aimee and I’m a fourth year English major. This year I ran for VP Academic in order to showcase all the incredible things Arts students are up to; I hope to support these activities in part by putting on a solid Arts Undergraduate Research Symposium this year. I also believe in the importance of providing students with academic support and guidance. Resources like academic workshops or guides can be incredibly valuable amidst the chaos of navigating courses.
I have a very eclectic mix of interests outside of school! I am half-Japanese, and am bilingual in English and Japanese. I love language and culture as a result, so any chance to discuss such topics and hear about other peoples’ experiences is exciting for me. I also enjoy music; I have been playing piano classically since I was four, later branching out to keyboard and keytar (honestly my music taste is all over the place and changes all the time – I just love hearing something new). Apart from music, I also love manga and anime, illustrating, creative writing, and practicing Kendo – a Japanese sword art.
If you ever have any concerns, please don’t hesitate to reach out!

BELEN TAMARIZ-MARTEL HERRERA

VP Communications

Hi! My name is Belen, and I’m an international student in my second year of a BA in Communication and Media Studies and Psychology. I ran for FASA VP Communications with the goal of liaising proper, two-way communication between art undergraduates and the Faculty of Arts departments. I am incredibly passionate about getting involved and I feel obliged to continue the push for meaningful change and representation within the Faculty of Arts at UCalgary. In addition, to growing FASA’s profile on campus, I want to create an engaging community. Reflecting on the last few unparalleled years, we must realize that each day comes with its own unique opportunities. I believe everyone has a voice, and together we can represent the most prominent faculty at the UofC. In my spare time, I love travelling and spending time with friends and family. Please feel free to reach out anytime.

Having been personally affected by these issues and being highly active on campus with other clubs, I want to play more of a part in helping advocate for the issue and actively make a change for this issue. In my free time, I love to travel and swim, meaning most days you would likely find me at the pool. I look forward to seeing you all at our upcoming events! :)
