Pumping up the hearing aids, this mature mama will be “hear” for you!

As a mature student at the University of Calgary, I bring a wealth of experience, leadership and problem-solving skills to the table. My background as a shop steward in my local union has allowed me to negotiate, advocate, and communicate effectively – skills that are essential for fighting for your academic rights. I actively listen, find solutions, and follow up, ensuring that students voices are not just heard, but acted upon.

Why am I running for VP of Academics?

Returning to the university later in life was not easy. Coming to orientation and being asked if my child would attend, being mistaken for a professor, or being “aged out” of clubs or opportunities did not make my first year the most exciting. I understand the unique challenges students face at different stages in their academic journey. I want to hear from you. I want your voice to be heard. Whether you are a first-year student trying to navigate your degree requirements or a senior student anxious about getting your spot when enrolment opens up, I want to make sure you get the support you need.

My goal in returning to university as the “old lady” is to improve the quality of teaching and learning for all students. As a facilitator in telecommunications and first aid, I learned the importance of bringing in real-world connections in education. Education should not just be about memorization – it should be about engagement, critical thinking, and preparation for the future. I want to bridge the gap between theory and practice, ensuring students graduate not just with knowledge but with the practical skills employers demand. For instance, AI is becoming a critical tool across industries, yet many students lack exposure to its real-world applications. I will advocate for greater cross-faculty education on AI in academia, equipping students with the skills needed to stay competitive in the job market.  I am passionate about turning words into action, especially when it comes to inclusivity, social change, and sustainability.

As your elected VP of Academics, I will bring:

  • Leadership & Strategic Vision – I know how to drive change and advocate for student success

  • Data-Driven Decision-Making – I will push for evidence-based policies that improve student learning

  • Communication & Interpersonal Skills – I will be accessible, responsive, and transparent.

  • Commitment to Diversity, Equity & Inclusion – I use my skills as an associate director for EDIA to fight for a more inclusive and supportive academic environment

  • Change Management & Innovation – I will work to modernize learning, address AI concerns, and adapt to evolving academic needs.

If you have concerns about academic policies, degree requirements, course availability, grading policies, or faculty performance, I will be there for you. If you are struggling with workload balance, accessibility, or the future of AI in education, I will be there for you.

Why vote for me?

I don’t claim to have all the answers, but I promise you this: I will find them. I will listen to you, advocate for you, and follow up. I will ensure that students' voices are heard at every level of academic decision-making.

As a leader, I believe in action, not just words. I believe in creating real change, not just talking about it. And I believe that your academic experience matters- because university should be more than just getting a degree. It should be about using the skills you learn and applying them to everyday life.

Vote for experience. Vote for action. Vote for a VP of Academics who will truly be “hear” for you!
